During the Battle of Hue City on 7 Feb 1968:
Was with 2/5. Joined Convoy to Bravo 1/11 (Rock Crusher) from Phu Bai. On return trip 18 Vehicles, 2 Ontos and 50 Marines ambushed by 2 Battalions of NVA (804th) and 818th). Crews A-11 (Dace Smith, Powell), Crews A-13 (Beirle and Prather). All killed but Cpl Dace Smith. Dace showed bravery by knocking out a compound of NVA containing Rocket Launchers and continued the fighting despite his Ontos being destroyed. He was well deserving a Valor award. I submitted documentation twice without results. Sent a copy to your web site; hoping that efforts could be taken to obtain this award for Cpl Smith. He is a Hero and deserves special recognition during this battle. Dace and I were both wounded in this ambush outside of Hue and spent time in Yokosuka Naval Hospital. 21 Marines Died that day; and the rest received multiple wounds. Some badly wounded marines were executed by the NVA. Semper Fi
