Fellow Marine |
With each monthly Breech Block an attempt is made to include material obtained through our ever-more-intense archival research and some of the first-hand stories from the Marines who have personally added more than a few chapters to the history of the action of Marine Corps Tanks and Ontos in the Vietnam War. In this issue you will read of Operation Piranha, an operation about which little has been written. Much of the material is not found in the "official reports" and cites both Marine Corps Tanks and Ontos action. Also covered is our amphibious operations' roots so important to understand the Commander-in-Chief's shifts in U.S. strategic focus from Europe to the Far East literal and the key role the Corps will play in that re-alignment. Carl Lemon, then a Lieutenant Tank Platoon Leader of the 1st Platoon, "B" Company, 1stTanks attached to BLT 1/7, tells his story and provides pictures. And, in the face of the Corps detractors who attempted to make their case that the Corps was a "second land army" in Vietnam - and therefore redundant - there's some background documentation of this amphibious operation to counter that argument. LtCol Herb Steigleman, USMC (Ret) provides his firsthand account (and pictures) of his experience as the Platoon Leader of the 2ndPlt, "A" Company, 1st Tanks attached to BLT 2/1 the Special Landing Force (SLF). His platoon was involved in each of the five Operation Dagger Thrust amphibious raids up and down South Vietnam's coast. Guy Wolfenbarger's, Jim Coan's, and Pappy Reynold's previously submitted articles are previewed and placed in the CC Abstracts with links - to be provided in subsequent Breech Blocks - to their complete stories which will appear in whole in The Book. And then there's the not-to-be-missed "The Last Mounted Pistol Charge of the (Steel) Horse Marines" byJohn "Baby Huey" Hughes presented here in its entirety. If you were involved in any of these events and would like to add your story to our history archives, please feel free to do so by contacting any member of the Foundation's staff.

Septembers' 1965 to 1970 - Marine Tanks & Ontos Action
Original PDF-formatted cuts/pastes from the unit command chronologies to the Breech Block have been transcribed into Word format and displayed in "Times New Roman 12 Font". Authors' materials are presented in "Arial 12 font" as a requirement of the Foundation's editors in order to create an E-Book. For ease of access for our Breech Block readers this document has also been reformatted again into PDF available by direct link from the Breech Block to the Foundation's web site. Note: During September 1965 in-country First Tank Units were under the administrative control (AdCon) and reported on by Third Tanks. For Example, Lt Carl Lemon's 1st Plt, Co "B", 1st Tanks, the float platoon attached to 1/7, participated in Operation Piranha. See 3rd Tanks CC Abstracts below for the details. Before we start through "Septembers in Vietnam" be alerted that in these re-formatted Command Chronology Abstracts - supplemented and complemented with personal stories and other comments - we have introduced "Marine Corps Amphibious Operations in the Vietnam War". Many Marines got a taste of Amphib Ops during their tour(s) but there were - and are - those who confused the war fought by the Corps as that of a "Second Land Army". The Foundation's treatment of the subject may dispel that misperception. Further, The Book will have a chapter exclusively dedicated to the Special Landing Force operations including Operation Dagger Thrust and Deckhouse Ops. We are also planning to devote a chapter to the Korean Marines. Bob Peavey in his "Praying for Slack" has some interesting comments on this topic. Ray Stewart Pres. VTHF usmcvthf@comcast.net

Correction to the August Breech Block
On 5 August, just after the August edition of the Breech Block hit the wire, we received the following heads up:
"On the night of August 9th 1965 twenty Marines from H&S Co. 3rd Tank Bn. were wounded you only listed Samuel Auguilar I was there that night there must be a record of this."
With that Pappy went digging and came up with this information:
Name | Unit | Date Of Action | Province or Operation | Award | Notes | 3rd Bn. CC says 20 WIA & 3 DoW, I could only find these 20. |

We are streamlining the Award Level Certificate process. Rather than issuing a certificate for each donation we will total the donations for the fiscal year ending in September and award one certificate reflecting that total. For example, rather that issuing a Platinum Award Certificate for each $250.00 donation given four times in a fiscal year, we will total the donations - $1,000.00 - and present one Platinum Plus Award Certificate.

There is a parallel process for rewarding your in kind, non-monetary (books, documents, articles for the Breech Block, etc.), and volunteer effort (assisting with Command Chronology research, Oral History summary report writing, etc) as well. Just contact me and we'll agree on where your work would be most meaningful for you in the context of our day-to-day goals attainment effort, the type of non-monetary donation you would like to make, and/or your planned article. Each Breech Block will cite donors and the VTHF web site will periodically post the up-to-date cumulatives.
If you desire to make your gift specific to our Book Project, please so indicate. Unless you specify otherwise, we will apply your donation where most appropriate. Of course, should you desire to remain anonymous, we'll honor that wish as well.
Thank you for your assistance.
