ANNEX G - 21

Eric Hammel was born June 29, 1946, in Salem, Massachusetts, and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Central High School of Philadelphia in January 1964 and earned a B.Sc. degree in Journalism from Temple University in 1972.

Hammel’s business career includes early employment in insurance and retail sales. He operated his own advertising agency in Pennsylvania, from 1971 through 1973. Following a year of kibbutz living in Israel, Hammel moved to San Francisco and opened another advertising agency in 1976. He wrote books and articles full time from 1984 to 1992, when he launched Pacifica Press (later Pacifica Military History). He worked as a senior editor at Presidio Press, 2002–2003, then as a freelance line editor, and returned to full-time writing in 2004.

Hammel has often appeared on national, regional, and local radio and television. He has been a guest lecturer at major Marine Corps commands and was a contributing editor for Leatherneck magazine from 1986 to 1994. He appeared as keynote speaker at the Admiral Nimitz Museum’s symposium on Pacific War commanders, on two segments of the Fox News Channel series War Stories, a 2003 History Channel episode on the Beirut bombing, and various other TV shows on battles he has studied.

Hammel was recipient of the Marine Corps Combat Correspondents Association 1985 Award of Merit for The Root. He was a Livingston Foundation Lecturer for the Atlanta Historical Society in 1990, and he keynoted the 2002 Admiral Nimitz Foundation symposium.
